Ster­ling to miss Malta match through in­jury Crys­tal Palace’s An­dros Townsend named as his re­place­ment

Crys­tal Palace winger An­dros Townsend has re­placed the in­jured Manch­ester City striker Ra­heem Ster­ling in the Eng­land squad for their World Cup qual­i­fiers against Malta and Slove­nia this month.

Townsend, 25, has played 11 times for his coun­try and scored three goals, but was not se­lected for Euro 2016.

He has played in all seven of Palace’s league games since join­ing from New­cas­tle for £13m in the sum­mer.

Eng­land face Malta on Satur­day and Slove­nia three days later.

No de­tails about Ster­ling’s in­jury were given yes­ter­day.
