Alvin Vella win­ner of Don­ald Vella me­mo­rial

Alvin Vella won the Don­ald Vella Me­mo­rial last Sun­day.

This event was or­gan­ised over a two day pe­riod and it was the first of the three se­lec­tion shoots for the ISSF World Cup Shot­gun to be held in Fe­bru­ary-March 2017 in New Delhi, In­dia.

In this week­end’s event, four ath­letes achieved the ISSF Olympic Games Min­i­mum Qual­i­fi­ca­tion Score (MQS) that is 112/125 hit tar­gets.

The qual­i­fi­ca­tion scores of these ath­letes who even­tu­ally also made the semi-fi­nal were, 114/125 hit tar­gets ob­tained by Ge­orge Mif­sud and Brian Galea, Stephen Vella hit 113/125 and Alvin Vella man­aged 112/125 hits.

The other two shoot­ers who made the semi-fi­nal were Paul For­mosa with the qual­i­fi­ca­tion score of 107/125 and Naz­zareno At­tard who scored 106/125.

Five of the six shoot­ers who com­peted in the semi-fi­nal hit 12/15 tar­gets from a sin­gle shot and a score of 11/15 hits, was reg­is­tered by Paul For­mosa who was elim­i­nated.

In the five-way shoot-off it was Alvin Vella and Naz­zareno At­tard who qual­i­fied for the Gold Medal Match, with Vella hit­ting 12+3 and At­tard hit­ting 12+2+1.

On the other hand, Stephen Vella and Brian Galea were forced to com­pete in the Bronze Medal Match as they man­aged 12+2+0 and 12+0+2 re­spec­tively, while Ge­orge Mif­sud failed to qual­ify in a Medal Match as he scored 12+0+1.

Alvin Vella was the over­all win­ner as he de­feated Naz­zareno At­tard in the Gold Medal Match with the score of 10/15 hits to 9/15 hits.

In the Bronze Medal match, Brian Galea and Stephen Vella tied scores again when they both smashed 11/15 tar­gets from a sin­gle shot.

In an­other shoot-off, it was Brian Galea who se­cured a place on the podium as he had the best of Stephen Vella with the score of 11/15+5 to 11/15+4.

A per­fect straight of 25/25 was reg­is­tered by Ge­orge Mif­sud on Day 2 of the com­pe­ti­tion.

The top shoot­ers in their re­spec­tive classes con­cluded Sun­day’s two qual­i­fi­ca­tion rounds of 25 tar­gets per round with;

The MSSF Shot­gun Trap pro­gramme will con­tinue on Sun­day, at the Qormi Clay Shoot­ing Club at 10am.
