A 53-year-old man, Joseph Xuereb, was yesterday acquitted from being complicit to theft and violence against a number of elderly persons.

Mr Xuereb was accused of being involved in three thefts which took place in 2012. He was accused of waiting in cars while a second person would carry out the thefts.

The victims were all elderly, aged between 78 and 82 years of age.

Judge Edwina Grima, presiding over the case, said that she could not find the accused guilty based on conjecture and maintained that the proof brought forward by the prosecution was too weak.

For this reason, Mr Xuereb was acquitted of all charges.

The prosecution was made up of lawyers Kristina Debattista and Anthony Vella from the office of the Attorney General, while lawyers Franco Debono and Arthur Azzopardi represented the accused.
