Mediterrasian Sushi - A fusion of tastes – Japanese flavours with a Mediterranean twist!!

World Sushi Champion, Pepi Anevski launched the novel Mediterrasian Sushi at Ocean Basket, Qawra. In creating this new menu, Anevski used his creative and technical skill to offer a new and unique sushi menu.

Mr Anevski, together with Ocean Basket Malta’s Managing Director Joseph Attard, discussed current sushi trends in Malta and the former was invited to train Ocean Basket Malta’s kitchen crew, showing them new techniques and introducing the staff to the ingredients making up Mediterrasian Sushi.

“Having a world sushi champion amongst us was indeed a pleasure and watching him create this new menu was a privilege,” expressed Mr Attard. “With this new and exciting menu we hope to entice those who until now, have only associated Sushi with something foreign and alien to the Mediterranean diet.”

Sushi exploded onto the European market in the 1990s and quickly became a regular offering in restaurants across the continent, but minimal innovation has seen consumer interest dwindle, until the recent Ocean Basket Sushi Revolution.

Anevski challenged the understanding of Sushi and as he explained, “Sushi is Japanese by origin. Broken down to its basic ingredients, it is seaweed, rice, wasabi, soy sauce and ginger. However, that is where the sushi rules end. I thought of how many fusion restaurants I worked for that learned to combine sushi with local flavours. We decided to stop imitating other Japanese restaurants and whilst respecting the sushi basics, we added on Mediterranean flavours.”

Ocean Basket Marketing Manager Jean Sloane commented, “This new menu was created as part of our efforts to innovate and offer something that is exciting, original and distinctly Ocean Basket. As seafood procuring experts, we are in a position to offer a superior product at an affordable price and now we can also claim a fresh new menu with a unique blend of flavours that remain true to our Mediterranean cuisine.”

The new menu includes the following items: Wasabi prawn gunkan, tarama gunkan with calamari heads, sesame salmon gunkan with zucchini and tempura, calamari gunkan with spring onions, crunchy Athena with pickled red onion, salmon tomato roll with fresh basil and grilled green pepper, kypro prawn roll with Romaine lettuce and origanum sauce, parsley prawn roll, volcano roll and lemon salmon roll.

Ocean Basket is situated in Qawra Road, Qawra and is open Monday to Sunday from noon to 10.30pm
