Gay-Straight Alliance group at MCAST launched

Malta Independent - - NEWS -

Social Dialogue, Civil Liberties and Consumer Affairs Minister Helena Dalli, together with the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) student council yesterday announced the launch of an LGBTIQ group called the ‘GayStraight Alliance MCAST’.

Dr Dalli explained that this group is a perfect example of how each student council can work so that all students at each stage of their academic career can feel as included and secure in there environment as possible.

She said that although there have been large improvements with regard to civil liberties in Malta, there are still those who do not respect the dignity of the LGBTIQ community. In line with this, Dr Dalli condemned in full the transphobic and bullying comments that were made by an educator to a trans individual:

“I thought that attitudes were changing, but instead I now feel as though we have gone backwards in time when I heard these comments from somebody who is supposed to educate in a kind and inclusive society.”

“It is for this reason that an organisation like GSAM is important, so that it can work towards a change in attitudes against the LGBTIQ people of this country,” said Dr Dalli.
