Paolites turn the tide in keen game
In this keen and hard-fought game, Paola managed to turn defeat into victory after suffering an early setback against a fast and aggresive Qormi side.
The game was well controlled by referee Mark Ciantar.
Qormi took an early lead after four minutes as Matthias Ablett released Ramiro Mallia in the area and after he was pushed, Zenden Gafa’ made no mistake from the spot sending Paola keeper Samuel Mifsud the wrong way.
In Paola’s first action Liam Ciantar was fouled outside the area and Kane Bonello missed the bar by inches from the free kick.
In their next attack in the 12th minute Paola equalised. It was Leonard Bugeja who scored with a header past Qormi keeper Miguel Falzon.
Andreas Vella then missed Qormi’s upright by inches from inside the area while at the other end Mifsud saved on Ablett after an Isaac Mizzi cross.
In another Paola action Bugeja dribbled past two defenders but missed the upright from the edge of the area.
In the last action before the break by Qormi Ablett dribbled past an opponent on the right flank but the ball was cleared away from his dangerous cross.
Qormi mounted the first action after restart as Irvine Sultana served Ablett with a through ball outside the area but his shot was blocked by a defender. Three actions were then mounted by Paola.
Falzon saved a Bugeja effort in two attempts. Then the same player served Rudy Cassar with a cross on the edge of the area but Falzon saved his shot to a corner.
In a Qormi action Sultana served Ablett with a good pass outside the area and Mifsud saved his effort from the distance.
Between the 74th and 76th minutes Paola scored two goals. Ciantar entered the area after dribbling past an opponent and scored with a hard low drive and the same player was then put through in the area by Miguel Cassar and netted with a hard grounder.
