Egyp­tian soc­cer club Smouha fires Brazil­ian coach Vieira

Brazil­ian soc­cer coach Jor­van Vieira has been fired from his job at Egyp­tian club Smouha af­ter sup­pos­edly mak­ing deroga­tory re­marks about the team’s chair­man and Egypt dur­ing a tele­phone con­ver­sa­tion. Egyp­tian me­dia yes­ter­day pub­lished a par­tial tran­script of the Brazil­ian’s pur­ported com­ments, but did not say how or who leaked them. Ac­cord­ing to the tran­script, Vieira said: “I would like to leave this damn coun­try as soon as pos­si­ble.” He then re­layed de­tails of an ar­gu­ment he had with Smouha chair­man Farag Amer, whom he de­scribed as mad. The 63-year-old Vieira led Iraq to its Asian Cup win in 2007 and last year took Cairo club Za­malek to its first league ti­tle in 10 years. Un­der Vieira, Smouha fin­ished third last sea­son.
