Maltese youths finalists in “Professor MárioRuivo Prize” European environmental contest
Christine Angele Mizzi and Mattija Caruana, are two teens who took part in the “Professor MárioRuivo Prize” project contest on the theme “Your Ocean, Your Future”. This is a European environmental contest open to teams of young people aged 11 – 16 years old.
They have reached the final stage where three finalist teams are chosen to implement their project in the community.
They are competing against two teams from Ireland.
“We got to know about this contest through a school website and both of us thought that this would be the perfect project for us who are both eager to help when we can to make our Maltese environment every day better. We brainstormed ideas on practical ways to keep our oceans cleaner and we even talked to two marine experts who gave us a lot of help.We entered this contest with the proposal to have bins with lids, to minimise the impact on the oceans, and promote responsible environmental behaviour. This way, we will ensure that on windy days the trash will not be blown away into our seas. Our proposal was accepted by the organisers, and we were given a sum of money to be able to actually do what we had proposed, ”they said
