Man charged with do­mes­tic abuse

A man whose name can­not be men­tioned in or­der to pro­tect the iden­tity of his fam­ily has been granted bail fol­low­ing re­ports of do­mes­tic abuse.

The ac­cused was ar­raigned in court yes­ter­day af­ter his wife ac­cused him of caus­ing her griev­ous in­jury and to fear the use of vi­o­lence against her. He is ac­cused of at­tack­ing his wife with­out the in­ten­tion of putting her life in dan­ger, threat­en­ing her, break­ing the con­di­tions of bail from a pre­vi­ous ar­raign­ment and re­laps­ing.

In a state­ment pro­vided to the po­lice, the ac­cused al­leged that while asleep in the liv­ing room with his two young chil­dren, he heard some­body kick­ing the door from the out­side.

Upon open­ing the door, his wife had stormed in to get clothes and be­gan of­fend­ing him. He re­port­edly told her that if this was re­ally her home she would not have left to go to her friend’s res­i­dence.

He re­ported that she be­gan scratch­ing him, push­ing him and grabbed his face. He or­dered her to leave to which she said that it was her house, and that af­ter he pushed her to the ground where she fell on a num­ber of shoes.

The ac­cused con­firmed that the ar­gu­ment took place be­fore their two small chil­dren.

Mag­is­trate An­thony Vella, pre­sid­ing over the case, granted the ac­cused bail against a €1,000 de­posit and a per­sonal guar­an­tee of €2,500. A pro­tec­tion or­der was granted in favour of the fam­ily.
