Big­gest chess event set to start to­mor­row

Malta’s big­gest chess event is set to start to­mor­row with 250 play­ers from over 40 coun­tries par­tic­i­pat­ing.

No less than 220 of them will be trav­el­ling to Malta specif­i­cally for the 7-day event be­ing held at the Im­pe­rial Ho­tel in Sliema. Some of those tak­ing part are com­ing from far away USA, In­dia, and Mon­go­lia.

Among them are 6 Grand Masters and 7 In­ter­na­tional Masters who will be vy­ing for the 4,500 Euro prize fund. Ama­teurs can also seek glory as there are sev­eral prizes for ev­ery cat­e­gory.

Orangised by Clarence Psaila, to­gether with the col­lab­o­ra­tion of Ches­sorg.de, the event has grown steadily both in num­bers and in­ter­na­tional recog­ni­tion and was fully booked a month in ad­vance.

It has at­tracted at­ten­tion from abroad with the fa­mous London Chess shop - Chess and Bridge de­cid­ing to of­fer each par­tic­i­pant a free chess magazine from their sub­scrip­tion listed items.

It has also caught the eye lo­cally, as the Rus­sian owned Tel’in Art Gallery lo­cated in Ta’ Xbiex will be ex­hibit­ing art­work dur­ing the tour­na­ment.

There will be good cov­er­age of the tour­na­ment on in­ter­na­tional web­sites and lo­cal news and chess por­tals in Ger­many, Swe­den, Eng­land, Italy and sev­eral other coun­tries.

The event is made pos­si­ble due to the fi­nan­cial sup­port given by the Malta Tourism Author­ity and Mar­ion Mizzi Well­be­ing.
