Malta Independent - - FRONT PAGE -

A number of environmental originations will be holding another protest against the Paceville master plan today.

The event will start at 10.30am near the LOVE monument in Spinola Bay. Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, Moviment Graffitti, Front Ħarsien ODZ, Ramblers Association, Youth for the Environment, Nature Trust, Żminijietna – Voice of the Left and Friends of the Earth Malta will be taking part.

“A gathering will be held to express our alarm at this Paceville Master plan which envisages the displacement of residents, is in breach of the Public Domain Act and does not consider the impact on surrounding localities. It also proposes land reclamation that will take up an ODZ area (the seabed) and threaten a Nature 2000 designated site as well as negatively impact the surrounding beaches, seabed and sea water,” the organisers said in a statement.

“Whilst the idea of a Masterplan is welcome, the process of drawing the Paceville Master plan was fundamentally flawed since only the developers’ proposals were taken into account. Communities in the area were completely ignored notwithstanding the massive impact it will have on them and the environment. Thus, this Master plan should be scrapped and the related process halted immediately.

“A new Master plan should be drawn up, taking into account the needs of residents and the environment, and being in line with Maltese law. A Master plan should also be on a national level so that it truly reflects the overall needs of our country.”
