Sir Michelangelo Refalo Sixth Form commemorates Shakespeare
The Department of English and Maltese at Sir Michelangelo Refalo Sixth Form, co-ordinated by Florence Garcia and Bernardette Gatt, lecturers in Maltese, has been working untiringly on its initiative to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the literary genius William Shakespeare.
The Soiree, Tiżwiqa Letterarja u Artistika will be held on Friday, 18 November in the hall of the Ministry for Gozo. Two scenes from Shakespeare’s tragedies Hamlet and Macbeth will be reenacted. Portia’s famous mercy passage and a Biblical love dialogue will be a fitting tribute to the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Classical dancing and singing, poetry and prose recitals will be the added spice for the evening.
The mainstay of the event will be the launching of the poetry anthology Fjuret id-Demm written by Anabelle Portelli and published by the Institute. This collection of poems integrates joy and suffering in a brilliant way. Anabelle who is currently studying Maltese at Advanced Level has an evident artistic talent and is in search of a poetical identity.
Promoting students’ skills and talents, not only academic ones, is crucial for the holistic vision of our Institute and vital for the realisation of these young people’s aspirations. Headmaster, Daniel James Cassar and Deputy Heads Joanne Ghirxi, Linda Attard Said, Joany Mizzi and Joseph Xerri together with Anabelle’s Maltese tutor Bernardette Gatt have gone out of their way to support this budding poet.
