Under 21 coach Silvio Vella will certainly be including new faces in his starting lineup in today’s friendly match against Cyprus at the Victor Tedesco Stadium (kickoff 2.30pm).

Vella has announced a newlook 18-strong squad for this afternoon’s friendly international.

It is evident that Vella is now starting his preparations to build a new squad for the next qualifying phase of the European Championship.

In fact, he only has five players from the previous squad to rely on – Kurt Zammit, Jake Grech, James Brincat, Jurgen Degabriele and Joseph Mbong.

The rest are complete newcomers, all coming up the ranks in their respective clubs and the national teams’ set-up.

The four players who were dropped by Vella from his provisional list were goalkeeper Jamie Azzopardi, defender Iousef Meli, midfielder Dylan Agius and forward Jacob Walker.

In the qualifying phase to this year’s Championship, Cyprus finished bottom of Group Eight on four points from eight matches.

They drew 2-2 at Belarus before beating Turkey 1-0 away.
