Lija keep promotion hopes alive
Lija kept their promotion hopes alive by beating Sirens 2-1, thus consolidating their fourth place on the grid and keeping up with the top three in the race for promotion. Both sides come from positive showings in their last outings, but unfortunately for Sirens, Lija proved to have something extra.
Lija’s pressing in the first stages of the match was rewarded after 14 minutes of play when they managed to take the lead. Antoine Borg was floored in the area by Dario Zampa, and the referee immediately pointed towards the spot. Erjon Beu’s effort was intercepted by goalkeeper, but was too strong for Sirens’ Cini to stop it completely.
Lija continued to dictate matters and in the 26th minute a Leon Muscat drive from a Beu cross finished just over the crossbar.
Five minutes before the break it was Aiden Galea who tried his luck with an effort from outside the area in which Sean Cini saved.
Lija doubled their lead nine minutes after the break, when Erjon Beu was brought down in the area by Leonardo Gabrieli, and another penalty was awarded in their favour. From the spot, Erjon Beu scored again.
Sirens were dangerous and managed to re-open the match on 63 minutes, when Ciantar crossed the ball over to Jonas Ekani, who found the goalkeeper outside his position and tapped the ball home with a low shot.
Six minutes later Sirens again came close when a Miguel Ciantar’s effort from outside the box following a Lee Grech pass finished wide.
