The two ministers expressed their satisfaction with the excellent bilateral relations between Malta and Latvia, with both sides agreeing that the two countries should reinforce the current cooperation and explore new opportunities, especially in the field of tourism and investment to further augment exchanges between the two countries.

The two sides reiterated their mutual support, both on the bilateral level, as well as the European level, especially in view of the upcoming Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January 2017.

In this regard, Minister Vella underlined Malta’s EU priorities, with particular reference to migration and keeping the Mediterranean region high on the EU’s agenda.

The two ministers shared their experience on their respective regions and exchanged their views on the EU’s external relations with particular reference to the European Neighbourhood Policy and the several regional challenges surrounding Europe, including the developments in Libya and Syria, and the ongoing difficulties in the Eastern Neighbourhood with particular mention of Turkey and Ukraine.

Focus was also given to the current EU’s internal discussions on its future, its security and the need to connect with its citizens.
