Ath­let­ics - Kenya Olympic com­mit­tee VP to be held in cus­tody for 3 days

A judge or­dered Kenya Olympic com­mit­tee vice pres­i­dent and swim­ming fed­er­a­tion head Ben Ekumbo be held in cus­tody for three days as po­lice in­ves­ti­gate him for al­legedly steal­ing spon­sored equip­ment meant for ath­letes. Ekumbo was ar­rested at his apart­ment on Mon­day, where po­lice found boxes of run­ning shoes, team uni­forms, track­suits and bags pro­vided by spon­sor Nike. Pros­e­cu­tors said in the court on Tues­day that some of the ap­parel had been stolen in 2010. They said Ekumbo was be­ing in­ves­ti­gated for theft, abuse of of­fice and ne­glect of duty. Ekumbo is the fourth Olympic com­mit­tee of­fi­cial fac­ing charges in re­la­tion to the al­leged theft of money and equip­ment. A sep­a­rate in­ves­ti­ga­tion found that more than $800,000 and large amounts of ap­parel may have been stolen by se­nior of­fi­cials.
