Malta Independent - - NEWS -

With effect from next week, applications for police conduct certificates can be made online.

People holding a Maltese identity card can now apply directly for this certificate which will be sent by post, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said yesterday.

This has been made possible following amendments to the law that were made in June. The certificates cannot be sent by email because they need to be printed on secure paper, Mr Abela said.

Type A certificates, for people with a clean record, will receive an email informing them that the certificate has been sent by post. In the case of Type B certificates, for people whose record is not clean, applicants will be asked to choose to either have the certificate sent to them by registered post or to collect it in person.

In 2015, some 58,000 certificates were issued, and up to the end of October this year, 56,000 have been issued.

In 2015, 18,083 people were convicted by the Maltese courts: 11,080 for involvement in criminal offences and the remaining 6,983 for contraventions.
