Lowly Fgura block Mqabba
Mqabba’s march towards the top positions was further hindered yesterday as they could only obtain a point from a scorless draw against lowly Fgura.
It was a low profile match which only burst to life in the dying moments of the game.
Fgura had the first opportunity through hard working Roderick Spiteri, as Johann Scicluna’s side lokked more aggressive and determined in the opening phase of the game.
On 18 minutes Mqabba had their first attempt at goal with Karl Cutajar’s effort slightly missing the base of the upright.
Mqabba continued to dictate in the remaining minutes of the first half and Fgura goalkeeper Matthew Camilleri made a great save off a Karl Cutajar first timer. On 42 minutes Mello Da Silva had a good opportunity but he headed well over the bar.
Tha last attempt came Fgura’s way when Fex Marriaga’s freekick missed the crossbar by a whisker.
The second half failed to lift off with the first scoring chance created by Fex Marriaga on 64 minutes, with the Fgura striker having two attempts at goal, both brilliantly saved by Debono.
Four minutes later Mello Da Silva tried his luck from the edge of the area but his effort was completely off target.
On 72 minutes Luke Vella Critien crossed towards Luca Casha who fired a good shot that slightly missed the target.
Four minutes later the same Casha tested Camilleri following a melee in front of goal.
Three minutes from time a Claudio Calleja grounder hit the base of the upright and on the other end Fgura were also unlucky when substitute Josef Dalli hit the upright following a Fex Marriaga freekick.
