PM: Brexit deal has to be ‘inferior’ to membership
The prime minister has said the UK will have to accept an “inferior” relationship with the European Union to the one it currently enjoys as a member.
Dr Joseph Muscat told reporters Malta wants a “fair” Brexit deal for Britain, but it “cannot be a superior”.
He added that he believed the matter was a “point of convergence” among other EU leaders.
Mr Muscat’s comments come after a memo captured on camera appeared to reveal that Brexit Secretary David Davis wanted to “have the cake and eat it”, indicating that he is seeking to retain the free trade benefits of membership after the UK leaves the EU.
