A 46-year-old man from Uzbekistan who is currently serving a prison sentence was yesterday charged with stealing a considerable amount of jewellery from a St Julian’s apartment three years ago.

Uzbek Zaynitidin Abdusalamov pleaded not guilty to the theft, which took place on 8 March, 2016, in George Borg Olivier Street. According to the charge sheet the stolen jewellery was worth more than €2,300.

Through a Russian-language translator, the accused told Magistrate Doreen Clarke that he used to live in St Julian’s before he was imprisoned.

Sources said the man had his fingerprints taken when he was taken to the prison over an unrelated crime and these matched scans taken from the scene of the robbery.

Legal aid lawyer Joe Ellis did not request bail since the accused is an inmate.

Inspector Fabian Fleri prosecuted.
