292 cases of ben­e­fit fraud be­tween Jan­uary and June of 2016

In the first half of 2016, 613 cases of ben­e­fit fraud were in­ves­ti­gated, 292 of which were found to have bro­ken so­cial se­cu­rity laws. This has led to sav­ings of €1,611,461.

The in­for­ma­tion came to light in the form of a par­lia­men­tary ques­tion tabled by Labour Party MP An­thony Agius De­celis.

Fam­ily Min­is­ter Michael Far­ru­gia re­vealed that the ben­e­fits fraud in­ves­ti­ga­tion de­part­ment had re­ceived 357 re­ports of al­leged ben­e­fits fraud.
