A very keen game played at a very fast pace. Balzan were the bet­ter out­fit in the first pe­riod while the sec­ond pe­riod was a bal­anced af­fair as both sides had their good mo­ments. Balzan cre­ated the first two ac­tions, Alis­tair Aquilina was fouled out­side the area and Ivin Borg drove slightly over the bar from the free kick.

Ja­cob Bar­tolo then re­leased Jamie Spiteri on the right flank and a de­fender cleared the ball to a corner which was taken by Matthew Pisani but Pem­broke keeper Alexan­der De­bono saved a shot by Bar­tolo from in­side the area. Pem­broke mounted two ac­tions. Larkin At­tard served Juan Gauci with a through ball in the area but Balzan keeper Brade­ley Scalpello de­nied him with a div­ing save. Later, Ab­dul Ab­dugil out­paced a de­fender on the right flank and from his cross, the ball ca­ressed the goal­mouth and was cleared to a corner. In an­other Balzan ac­tion, Spiteri re­leased Eric Atkins in the area but he drove over the bar when well placed. In their next ac­tion in the 27th minute they opened the score as Aquilina set Spiteri free in the area and he net­ted with a low hard drive. Pem­broke re­stored par­ity two min­utes be­fore the break as Dyon Grima in the area who scored with a hard grounder. Pem­broke cre­ated the first ac­tion af­ter the re­sump­tion as Mat­tia Comes was fouled out­side the area and Scalpello saved the free kick by Juan Gauci. Six min­utes be­fore the end, Balzan scored a sec­ond goal. Spiteri was fouled on the right flank and the free kick cre­ated havoc in Pem­broke’s area. In the melee that en­sued sub­sti­tute Neil Ma­gri scored with a header. Pem­broke keeper De­bono was fouled and in­jured in the ac­tion but the ref­eree al­lowed the point to stand de­spite the protests by the Pem­broke play­ers. The goalie was at­tended to by the nurse on duty, but could not re­sume play­ing and had to be sub­sti­tuted. He was also taken to the near­est Health Cen­tre for fur­ther ex­am­i­na­tion. The ref­eree then whis­tled the end of the game in the 68th minute, that is two min­utes be­fore the nor­mal time.
