Keen game abondoned
Balzan 2 Pembroke 1 (Abandoned 68th minute)
A very keen game played at a very fast pace. Balzan were the better outfit in the first period while the second period was a balanced affair as both sides had their good moments. Balzan created the first two actions, Alistair Aquilina was fouled outside the area and Ivin Borg drove slightly over the bar from the free kick.
Jacob Bartolo then released Jamie Spiteri on the right flank and a defender cleared the ball to a corner which was taken by Matthew Pisani but Pembroke keeper Alexander Debono saved a shot by Bartolo from inside the area. Pembroke mounted two actions. Larkin Attard served Juan Gauci with a through ball in the area but Balzan keeper Bradeley Scalpello denied him with a diving save. Later, Abdul Abdugil outpaced a defender on the right flank and from his cross, the ball caressed the goalmouth and was cleared to a corner. In another Balzan action, Spiteri released Eric Atkins in the area but he drove over the bar when well placed. In their next action in the 27th minute they opened the score as Aquilina set Spiteri free in the area and he netted with a low hard drive. Pembroke restored parity two minutes before the break as Dyon Grima in the area who scored with a hard grounder. Pembroke created the first action after the resumption as Mattia Comes was fouled outside the area and Scalpello saved the free kick by Juan Gauci. Six minutes before the end, Balzan scored a second goal. Spiteri was fouled on the right flank and the free kick created havoc in Pembroke’s area. In the melee that ensued substitute Neil Magri scored with a header. Pembroke keeper Debono was fouled and injured in the action but the referee allowed the point to stand despite the protests by the Pembroke players. The goalie was attended to by the nurse on duty, but could not resume playing and had to be substituted. He was also taken to the nearest Health Centre for further examination. The referee then whistled the end of the game in the 68th minute, that is two minutes before the normal time.
