Court denies bail in spite of agreement between prosecution, defence
A court yesterday denied bail to a man charged with threatening and blackmailing a person through an electronic device after it found that this had not been the first time the accused had committed this type of offence.
The offence was committed on 28 August at 9.15 am, after Albert Schembri, aged 26, from Birżebbuġa, sent abusive messages to Marlon Bonello.
Schembri, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, received no sympathy from the court, which was presided over by Magistrate Joe Mifsud, who noted that that as time passes more and more abuses are taking place over electronic devices and similar means of communication.
He then refused Schembri’s request for bail in spite of an agreement being made between the prosecution and defence.
“This is not the first time it has happened with this individual; hopefully, he will be able to reflect on his decisions.”
