‘Even the orig­i­nal or­gan­is­ers are not at­tend­ing’ – May­ors skip­ping out on Marsa protest

The may­ors of Marsa, Ham­run, Paola, Pi­eta’, Msida, Gzira and Flo­ri­ana will not be at­tend­ing the protest that will be tak­ing place this Sun­day in Marsa, a state­ment re­leased by Pres­i­dent of the Lo­cal Coun­cils As­so­ci­a­tion Mario Fava has an­nounced.

The protest is a sol­i­dar­ity walk re­gard­ing res­i­dents’ con­cerns over the crime in the area, which they at­tribute to the highly con­cen­trated African pop­u­la­tion in the area.

Fava said that the may­ors took this de­ci­sion based on the fact that the protest had been taken over by far right el­e­ments, in fact, “the orig­i­nal group of peo­ple who or­gan­ised this protest are not at­tend­ing be­cause of the same rea­sons.”

“The May­ors and coun­cil­lors along with Lo­cal Coun­cil As­so­ci­a­tion are con­tin­u­ing talks with the Gov­ern­ment to in­crease se­cu­rity in the con­cerned lo­cal­i­ties.

“The gov­ern­ment has heard the voices of the May­ors, res­i­dents, and work­ers in the area, and there has al­ready been an im­pact.”
