Count­ess Vi­viana Crespi 1923-2014

Born Vi­vian Stokes in Wash­ing­ton, DC, she was an in­ti­mate of the Kennedy fam­ily – as a child­hood friend of Jackie and later meet­ing Jack through her first hus­band, Henry Still­man Tay­lor. She led an in­ter­na­tional life, at­tend­ing ten dif­fer­ent schools in five dif­fer­ent coun­tries where she learned Ital­ian, French and Ger­man. She mar­ried her sec­ond hus­band, Marco Fabio Crespi in 1950 but they sep­a­rated in the early 1960s. Later in life she was linked for sev­eral years with the Bri­tish ac­tor James Ma­son. The cou­ple were said to have in­spired two char­ac­ters in Vladimir Nabokov’s book ‘Ada’, af­ter the nov­el­ist met them on the Swiss Riviera.
