Sibyl, Lady Cholmondeley 1894-1989

Malta Independent - - LIFESTYLE ON SATURDAY -

Wife of the 5th Marquess of Cholmondeley, and sister of Sir Philip Sassoon, the British politician and art collector, Sibyl was appointed as Superintendent of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) in 1945 and the following year was made CBE. On an evening out with her in 1965 Beaton said of her that she still managed to have the aura of pre-1914 luxury about her and was ‘likely to wear a tuberose pinned by a pearl and diamond brooch to her dress… she gave a glimpse of another world, the world I had yearned for as a child’.
