2,208 di­vorce re­quests ap­proved by Mal­tese courts since in­tro­duc­tion

2,208 di­vorce re­quests have been ap­proved by court in Malta and Gozo since di­vorce was in­tro­duced in 2011.

Fig­ures tabled in par­lia­ment Mon­day by Jus­tice Min­is­ter Owen Bon­nici show that 2,125 di­vorce re­quests were ap­proved by the courts in Malta be­tween Oc­to­ber of 2011 (when it was in­tro­duced), till today, whilst 83 were ap­proved in the Gozo court.

This year saw the low­est num­ber of di­vorce re­quests ap­proved, with 274 so far.

2012 saw the high­est num­ber of di­vorces in Malta, with 432, whilst 2015 was the year that the Gozo courts saw the high­est num­ber of di­vorce re­quests ap­proved, with a to­tal of 22.

A ref­er­en­dum on di­vorce was held in Malta on 28 May 2011. It came into ef­fect on the 1 Oc­to­ber of that year.
