Re­search for so­ci­ety

Re­search can trans­form a coun­try. But how do re­search in­sti­tu­tions and so­ci­ety work to­gether most ef­fec­tively for mu­tual ben­e­fit? The Uni­ver­sity of Malta is ex­cited to host the 4th an­nual NU­CLEUS con­fer­ence (funded by Hori­zon 2020) that will try and an­swer this ques­tion. The con­fer­ence is tak­ing place from the 11–12 Oc­to­ber (Uni­ver­sity of Malta, Val­letta cam­pus).

The NU­CLEUS pro­ject, funded by the EU, is a four-year study ex­plor­ing how to best em­bed a cul­ture of re­spon­si­ble re­search and in­no­va­tion (RRI) and mak­ing this part of the gov­er­nance and prac­tice of re­search in­sti­tu­tions. Whilst ad­dress­ing per­ti­nent is­sues such as gen­der equal­ity and ethics, RRI seeks to forge a closer re­la­tion­ship with the pub­lic to meet so­ci­etal needs. The Uni­ver­sity of Malta is one of ten part­ners across three con­ti­nents that have spent sev­eral years analysing re­search poli­cies, ef­fec­tive pub­lic en­gage­ment meth­ods and ben­e­fi­cial prac­tices for so­ci­ety.

This con­fer­ence marks the be­gin­ning of the fi­nal stage of the NU­CLEUS pro­ject and will fo­cus on lessons learned, rec­om­men­da­tions for mov­ing for­ward and sus­tain­able prac­tices to en­sure longevity be­yond the pro­ject’s life­time.

Key­note speak­ers in­clude Dr Gi­u­lia Bub­bolini, head of EU projects at the Ital­ian Cen­tre for In­no­va­tion and Eco­nomic De­vel­op­ment (CISE), who will open the con­fer­ence with a dis­cus­sion on how re­search can re­sult in mean­ing­ful pub­lic poli­cies that ben­e­fit so­ci­ety. Dr Paul Man­ners, Direc­tor of the Na­tional Cen­tre for Co-or­di­na­tion of Pub­lic En­gage­ment (UK), will give a talk on re­think­ing pub­lic en­gage­ment ef­forts that re­sult in nec­es­sary cul­tural shifts. Maria Acaso, leader of the Ed­u­ca­tional Revo­lu­tion with Arts, will talk about how art and academia can be bridged to re­form ed­u­ca­tion.

Con­cur­rent work­shop top­ics in­clude shar­ing RRI best prac­tice, how to pre­pare com­mu­ni­ties for en­gag­ing with in­sti­tu­tions, pub­lic en­gage­ment through the arts and embed­ding RRI into cur­ric­ula.
