Church in Malta raises over €190,000 for Italian earthquake victims

-

So far, the Church in Malta has collected €190,880 for the victims of last month’s earthquake in Italy.

The money was collected from donations received in the parishes and from deposits made directly into the ‘Caritas Malta Emergency Fund,’ the Archbishop’s Curia said yesterday.

The initiative, which was launched on the day after the earthquake, was started at the request of Archbishop Charles Scicluna, who thanked the Maltese for their generosity.

The money will now be transferred to Caritas International, which has been helping the earthquake victims, including the provision of 1,200 meals a day. The Church in Italy has also opened up its properties to the homeless and is also offering counselling service.

The 24 August earthquake killed 297 people, injured 388 and left over 3,000 homeless.

Donations can be made by cheque to ‘Caritas Malta Emergency Fund’, 5 Lion Street, Floriana FRN 1514.
