2013 Lampe­dusa mi­grant tragedy in­volv­ing the AFM made into fea­ture film

The events of the 11 Oc­to­ber, 2013 mi­grant tragedy in which some 270 men, women and chil­dren lost their lives has been turned into a fea­ture film by jour­nal­ist Fabrizio Gatti.

The film, Un Unico Destino, will be aired on Sky At­lantic on 15 Oc­to­ber.

The film also in­cludes the tes­ti­mony of a Mal­tese sol­dier who wit­nessed the ship­wreck.

The boat car­ry­ing Syr­ian and Pales­tinian mi­grants cap­sized af­ter tak­ing in wa­ter 60 miles south of Lampe­dusa, when Malta and Italy be­came en­gaged in a stand­off over re­spon­si­bil­ity for go­ing to the boat’s aid. The Armed Forces of Malta res­cued 143 mi­grants that day.

A num­ber of Ital­ian navy of­fi­cers have been charged with man­slaugh­ter and fail­ure to ren­der as­sis­tance dur­ing the tragedy before the Ital­ian courts. The case is on­go­ing.
