2013 Lampedusa migrant tragedy involving the AFM made into feature film
The events of the 11 October, 2013 migrant tragedy in which some 270 men, women and children lost their lives has been turned into a feature film by journalist Fabrizio Gatti.
The film, Un Unico Destino, will be aired on Sky Atlantic on 15 October.
The film also includes the testimony of a Maltese soldier who witnessed the shipwreck.
The boat carrying Syrian and Palestinian migrants capsized after taking in water 60 miles south of Lampedusa, when Malta and Italy became engaged in a standoff over responsibility for going to the boat’s aid. The Armed Forces of Malta rescued 143 migrants that day.
A number of Italian navy officers have been charged with manslaughter and failure to render assistance during the tragedy before the Italian courts. The case is ongoing.
