Sports National Conference drafts the way forward

- CHRIS CASSAR

The first in a series of sports national conferences organised by the Nationalist Party was held on Friday.

This sports conference saw the participation of various local sports associations, Sports Malta, the Malta Olympic Committee, the Ghaqda Gurnalisti Sports, the Kunsill Nazzjonali taz-Zghazagh, Apollon Limassol media manager Panikos Frangkoudis, and other athletes.

The conference focussed on four main topics, the use of European funds, the values in sport, the use of social media platforms, with a presentation from MP Ivan J. Bartolo, and racism in sport.

More conferences of the sort will be organised by the party in the future in collaboration with Team Sport PN, the sport section of the party which was recently officially recognised by the party statute and is now represented in the Nationalist Party General Council.

In his speech at the conference, party leader Dr. Adrian Delia said that we have a lot to learn from sport.

He thanked all those who worked to organise this conference and to all those who took part.

Dr. Delia said that a lot has been done in sports but a lot more still has to be done especially in the fight against corruption in sport. He also congratulated swimmer Neil Agius for his successful Sicily-Malta crossing after a 28hour non-stop swim.

Nationalist Party sports spokesman Robert Cutajar said in his speech that this conference was the start of a consultation process not only with athletes and sports associations, but all the Maltese society. Cutajar said that the opposition will be pushing to extend Skola Sport to postsecondary level.
