The 2015 World Travel Awards
In its 22nd year, the prestigious organization recognized Cancun and the Riviera Maya for excellence and quality in the tourism industry with eight country awards and five regional awards during the Mexico and Central America ceremony
The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to recognize, award, and celebrate excellence in all areas of the tourism industry. This annual awards event is among the most prestigious in the tourism and travel sector. In 2014, more than 650,000 individual votes were submitted by tourism professionals. The awards are organized and awarded by region. Then, the regional winners for each category compete in the final round of voting for the World Travel Awards, This year’s gala event ceremony for the Mexico and Central America Region awards was held in Bogotá, Colombia on October 10.
As in previous years, Cancun, Cozumel and the Riviera Maya were nominated in a number of categories. The categories include Air, Car, Cruise, Destination, Hotels and Resorts, Meetings and Conventions, Spa, as well as, Travel Agency and Tour Operators. Each main category may have one to fourteen subcategories.
Cancun was among the favorites for a multitude of awards including: Leading Airport, Leading Beach Destination, Leading Business Travel Destination, Leading Destination, Leading Meetings and Conference Destination, and Leading Tourist Board. The Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau won the award for the Leading Tourist Board, and the Cancun International Convention Center won in the category of Leading Meetings and Convention Centre.
Cozumel was nominated in two different categories including Leading Cruise Port and Leading All Inclusive (The Occidental Grand Cozumel).
This year, Tulum and Cancun were both nominated as leading beach destinations despite both having had problems with sargassum this year. In the end, the 2015 award Mexico and Central America’s Leading Beach Destination went to Placencia, Belize.
Hacienda Tres Rios Resort, Spa & Nature Park was nominated for four categories: Leading Nature Reserve, Leading All Inclusive, Leading Family Resort, and Leading Green Hotel. Hacienda Tres Ríos and Fairmont Mayakoba competed for best Green Hotel.
