Mayor supports proposal to move universities outside of UB
On August 31, during a meeting of the working group tasked with decreasing traffic congestion, Mayor S.Batbold supported several solutions including the proposal to relocate universities outside of Ulaanbaatar.
The idea has not been fully approved yet but the mayor has delegated the responsibility of researching and furthering efforts to city officials. S.Batbold has made a proposal to Minister of Education G.Chuluunbaatar to work together on this matter also.
Currently, there are more than 150,000 university students studying in 96 universities and colleges in Ulaanbaatar.
The proposal to relocate universities outside the capital to campus-towns has long been discussed but concrete action is yet to be taken.
“In order to offset the traffic congestion of Ulaanbaatar, there are several steps and actions that need to be taken. One of the discussed solutions is to relocate large universities to Darkhan, Erdenet, the agriculturally developed Selenge Province, or the outskirt districts of Ulaanbaatar,” the mayor detailed in his proposal to the Minister of Education.
Mayor S.Batbold said that experts predict that the measure will not only help alleviate pressure on densely populated areas but also promote the development of not only other cities but also rural areas.
S.Batbold has also said that allowing any new construction of universities should be prohibited and that universities should be built in the alternative locations mentioned in the future.
