State Freestyle Wrestling Cham­pi­onships com­mences to­day


This year’s State Freestyle Wrestling Cham­pi­onships is com­menc­ing on Jan­uary 12 in Khangarid Sports Palace in Orkhon Province.

Many new rules and cus­toms are be­ing im­ple­mented this year. For in­stance, the cham­pi­onships are be­ing held in the new weight cat­e­gories an­nounced by United World Wrestling, which de­cided to in­crease the num­ber of weight cat­e­gories from eight to 10 at se­nior, U-23 and junior lev­els in March 2017. Freestyle wrestling will keep all its cur­rent Olympic and non-Olympic weight cat­e­gories (57 kg, 61 kg, 65 kg, 70 kg, 74 kg, 79 kg, 86 kg, 92 kg, 97 kg, and 125 kg) and will sim­ply add 79 kg and 92 kg. Women’s cat­e­gory will in­crease the low­est weight from 48 kg to 50 kg and slightly re­dis­tribute sev­eral weight cat­e­gories, mostly by only one or two kilo­grams (50 kg, 53 kg, 55 kg, 57 kg, 59 kg, 62 kg, 65 kg, 68 kg, 72 kg, and 76 kg).

Also, three new are­nas made by Tais­han Sports Equip­ment Co., Ltd. and ap­proved by United World Wrestling were made avail­able this year.

The win­ners of this year’s cham­pi­onship will be able com­pete for a right to take part in the World Freestyle Wrestling Cham­pi­onships. In other words, the ath­letes who will take part in the World Freestyle Wrestling Cham­pi­onships will not be cho­sen from this com­pe­ti­tion di­rectly but needs to col­lect scores and com­pete one more time for the right to take part in the World Freestyle Wrestling Cham­pi­onships.

The State Freestyle Wrestling Cham­pi­onships was held in Erdenet once be­fore 15 years ago.
