State Freestyle Wrestling Championships commences today
This year’s State Freestyle Wrestling Championships is commencing on January 12 in Khangarid Sports Palace in Orkhon Province.
Many new rules and customs are being implemented this year. For instance, the championships are being held in the new weight categories announced by United World Wrestling, which decided to increase the number of weight categories from eight to 10 at senior, U-23 and junior levels in March 2017. Freestyle wrestling will keep all its current Olympic and non-Olympic weight categories (57 kg, 61 kg, 65 kg, 70 kg, 74 kg, 79 kg, 86 kg, 92 kg, 97 kg, and 125 kg) and will simply add 79 kg and 92 kg. Women’s category will increase the lowest weight from 48 kg to 50 kg and slightly redistribute several weight categories, mostly by only one or two kilograms (50 kg, 53 kg, 55 kg, 57 kg, 59 kg, 62 kg, 65 kg, 68 kg, 72 kg, and 76 kg).
Also, three new arenas made by Taishan Sports Equipment Co., Ltd. and approved by United World Wrestling were made available this year.
The winners of this year’s championship will be able compete for a right to take part in the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships. In other words, the athletes who will take part in the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships will not be chosen from this competition directly but needs to collect scores and compete one more time for the right to take part in the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships.
The State Freestyle Wrestling Championships was held in Erdenet once before 15 years ago.
