A fire that started in Songinokhairkhan District early on the morning of October 24 has claimed five lives, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported. The victims were a family of five, which included the father, the mother, two children, and their grandfather.

The family had only recently set up their ger in a fenced area that they were renting. The parents of the children were a young couple in their 30s, the children were aged two to five, and the grandfather was in his 60’s.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, there has been public outcry in reaction to the reports that firefighters were not able to reach the family’s ger in time due to the fact that the firetruck could not fit between fences of other families. Many have called on the mayor and the city administration to address the issue of city planning and the access of emergency services around the city.

In the first nine months of 2018, a total of 2,742 structures fires claimed 53 lives across the country, according to NEMA.
