Shwe Kyin ap­points renowned monks as deputies

SHWE Kyin Nikaya re­li­gious or­der in Hmawbi town­ship of Yangon has ap­pointed Si Shin Say ada wand Nan dam a lab hi va ms a as deputy head soft he re­li­gious sect.

Bhad­danta Vizawta, chair of Shwe Kyin, made the an­nounce­ment at the monas­tic or­der’s 20th meet­ing at Say Kane Na Rama monastery in Hmawbi Wednesday morn­ing.

Shwe Kyin’s head monks are Bhad­danta Mar­nita Thiri Bi­wun­tha of Mat­taya Thah­tay monastery and Sitagu Sayadaw Ashin Nyanis­sara.

Si Shin Sayadaw Bhad­danta Agga Nyana Bi­wun­tha, 82, has 60 years in the monk­hood in Man­dalay Re­gion, and is well­versed in Pali lit­er­a­ture.

Nan dam a lab hi va ms a ,79, is the rec­tor of the In­ter­na­tional Ther­avada Bud­dhist Mis­sion­ary Univer­sity in Yangon, and has 59 years of ser­vice in the monk­hood.

On the sec­ond day of the meet­ing, for­mer Pres­i­dent U Thein Sein and U Than Htay, chair of the Union Sol­i­dar­ity and De­vel­op­ment Party, at­tended the meet­ing. Com­man­derin-chief of Defence Ser­vices Se­nior Gen­eral Min Aung Hlaing at­tended the meet­ing on the third day.

There are over 550,000 monks in Myan­mar, of which the Thud­hamma or­der has the big­gest share, with nearly 500,000. Shwe Kyin is the sec­ond largest with 50,000 monks. The other seven sects are Maha Dwara, Mula Dwara, Anauk Chaung Dwara, Wailu Wun, Hnget­twin, Maha Yin and Ku Toe.
