THE WOODEN LAND

The Myanmar Times - Weekend - - Weekend | Photo Essay - Photos: Aung Htay Hlaing

At a market in the no hern pa of Shwedagon Pagoda, two dozens of shops sell wooden statues of the Buddha, mystical animals as well as Bo Bo Aung and Bo Min Gaung (two weikzas or semi-immo al supernatural figures). Behind the storefronts are workshops where the sculptors create their wares. For many years, sculptors have plied their trade at the country’s most impo ant Buddhist holy site, producing sculptures and carvings for shops who sell them to tourists and pilgrims.
