An explosion at a Mandalay gold mine left one worker dead and another injured on July 10.

The workers were loading rolls of gunpowder for gold mining in the Shwe Than Danan company’s TPK142 mine in Myaing Gyi Ngu ward of Thabeikkyin township’s Chaung Gyi village tract. The rolls plus two bags of gunpowder, weighing about 50 pounds, suddenly detonated.

Ko Soe Min Thu, 28, from Ngapidaung village in Ngazun township, died on the spot. Ko Maung Kyaw, also known as Ko Wai Lu Kyaw, 22, from the same village, was injured and sent to Singu hospital, then transferred to Mandalay hospital.

The Thabeikkyin township police station opened a case and is investigating charges that could carry up to a 20-year prison sentence.
