Selection fight wrapup: Who will fight on?
IN a suitably knockabout event, the Mandalay Traditional Lethwei Subcommittee held its challenge and regional selection matches at Aung Myay Mingalar Stadium on July 30. In 10 three-round bouts pitting under-10s against each other, Aung Thu (Anawah) and Aung Sanay (Tharaphu) drew in a clash that brought cheers from the audience.
Newcomers Aung Ta Khit (Yadanar Pon) and Thet Ko (Mway Pway) also drew, while Phyo Gyi (Amarapura) yielded to a volley of attacks by Kyaw Min Naing (Shwe Taung Yin).
For all their energy and aggression, Min Htet Thar (Anawah Kyaw Gyi) and Soe Min Thein (Shwe Taung Yin) also shared a draw.
Shan Nyi (Zay Ya Ti) beat Win Tun (Shwe Taung Yin) in the second and Shwe Kyar (Sagaing) in the first against Aung Gyi (Mway Pway). Sagaing Tar Min Thet (Shwe Taung Yin) beat Myo Sat Tit (Mway Pway) in the second, and Zaw Wunna (United) prevailed over Nay Aung Win (Pyin Oo Lwin) in the first round.
After the regional selection event, the An Bwar (United) vs Thet Zue Aung (Shwe Taung Yin) and Arkar Min (Shwe Taung Yin) vs Kyaw Swar Win (United) matches were scheduled to go four rounds. But after two rounds, Thet Zue Aung Thet Zue Aung lost to An Bwar in kicks.
Despite mounting a valiant onslaught of punches and kicks, Kyaw Swar Win managed only a draw against Arkar Min’s superior grips.
Tun Lin Khant (Zayar Club) knocked out Dain (Mataya) in a threerounder.
In the last match, a five-round special challenge that pitted the equally experienced Naing Bo (Mandalay) against Sin Yin Lay (Shwe Taung Yin), Sin Yin Lay’s rib punches encountered Naing Bo’s lightning thrusts. A perfect match of aggression and experience, their bout ended in a draw.
