Rio Tinto half-year un­der­ly­ing profit low­est in 12 years

Min­ing gi­ant Rio Tinto said its un­der­ly­ing earn­ings dived to their low­est point for more than a decade in the first half, hit by weak commodity prices, even as its net prof­its surged.

Un­der­ly­ing prof­its – in­vestors’ pre­ferred mea­sure – at the world’s sec­ond­biggest miner fell 47 per­cent from a year ear­lier to US$1.56 bil­lion in the six months through June, the low­est since 2004. –
