Canada posts record US$2.7 bil­lion trade deficit

Canada posted a record C$3.6 bil­lion (US$2.7 bil­lion) trade deficit in June. Im­ports rose 0.8 per­cent to C$45.0 bil­lion in the month, while ex­ports in­creased 0.6pc to C$41.4 bil­lion, widen­ing Canada’s trade deficit well be­yond the C$2.8 bil­lion fore­cast by an­a­lysts. Im­ports from the United States – Canada’s largest trad­ing part­ner - climbed while ex­ports fell. As a re­sult, Canada’s trade sur­plus with the US nar­rowed from C$2.6 bil­lion in May to C$1.8 bil­lion in June.
