New en­voy to Sin­ga­pore re­signs over drink driv­ing

Tai­wan’s new en­voy to Sin­ga­pore re­signed yes­ter­day af­ter he was caught drink-driv­ing last week in the is­land’s cap­i­tal in Taipei, just hours af­ter he had been sworn into of­fice. An­to­nio Chi­ang – a vet­eran jour­nal­ist and po­lit­i­cal com­men­ta­tor – said he had drunk whisky and wine over din­ner with friends be­fore he was caught on Au­gust 2. His ar­rest trig­gered calls for his res­ig­na­tion from cam­paign­ers in Tai­wan against drink driv­ing. The of­fice of Tai­wan’s new pres­i­dent Tsai Ing-wen said yes­ter­day she had ac­cepted his res­ig­na­tion and “re­spected” his de­ci­sion.
