School man­ager held for ban­ning na­tional an­them

In­dian po­lice have ar­rested the man­ager of a pri­vate school on charges of in­sult­ing the na­tional an­them af­ter he al­legedly barred staff from singing it on the premises. Zia ul Haq was taken into cus­tody af­ter sev­eral staff, in­clud­ing the school prin­ci­pal, re­signed over his re­fusal to let them sing the an­them on the eve of In­de­pen­dence Day cel­e­bra­tions at M A Convent School in Al­la­habad, Ut­tar Pradesh, on Au­gust 8. Mr Haq be­lieved cer­tain words in the na­tional an­them, “Jana Gana Mana”, writ­ten by No­bel lau­re­ate Rabindranath Tagore, were un-Is­lamic.
