Mandalay police nab iPhone thief using GPS locator
Three Mandalay men were arrested on August 8 for stealing a purse after police tracked them down through an iPhone locator feature.
Daw She Meng was near the southern moat and 74th Street, walking to dinner from Thazin Pann Hotel in Chan Aye Tharzan township, when three men on motorcycles took her bag and her iPhone 6s. She reported the incident to the hotel owner who in turn notified the township police.
Police Captain Kyaw Thar Oo and other officers went onto their computers and found that the device was still transmitting its location. It popped up on 86th Street between 9th and 10th streets but then lost signal. Then it popped up again at the corner of 86th and 9th streets.
Finally, police narrowed it down to an exact location and went to investigate. They found Ko Soe Min Thu, 20, with the iPhone charging in his bedroom. He confessed that he, along with Ko Zay Yar Khine and Ko Myo Myint Naing, stole the bag, ditching it near a drinking-water factory on 12th Street and throwing other items in a drain. He exchanged the stolen US dollars for kyats. Police are pursuing charges that could carry up to 10 years in prison.
