Actor sentenced to prison time for insulting military
The Kamaryut Township Court sentenced actor U Tun Nge on August 26 to two years and nine months in prison after finding his car on the Hledan overpass in Yangon covered with spray-painted remarks deemed insulting to the military.
On March 1, an abandoned car parked on the Hledan flyover was discovered with the offending writings. It was later determined that the vehicle’s owner was U Tun Nge. Kamaryut township police arrested him and filed charges with the Kamaryut Township Court under Motor Vehicle Law section 58(a), as well as penal code sections 294/295/505(b) and its defamation section, 500.
A state flag was affixed to the rear glass of his Nissan Maxima and insulting spray-painted writings about the military were also discovered on the back of the car. Three Roman alphabet letters spelling out “RED” were adhered to the front windshield of the car and a small state flag and a Buddhist religious flag were also found on the car bonnet, as well as the letters “ILE” in green. Insulting spray-painted writings about the military were also found on the front of his car.
The court also found U Tun Nge guilty of charges under the State Flag Law, legislation that seeks to protect the integrity and dignity of the national banner.
