Melania Trump sues media over escort claims
MELANIA Trump, the wife of US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has sued two media outlets that alleged she worked as an escort in the 1990s.
The suit is against Mail Media Inc, which publishes the Daily Mail Online, and Webster G Tarpley, who publishes a blog.
A Slovenian ex-model, Ms Trump is seeking damages to the tune of US$150 million.
“These defendants made several statements about Mrs Trump that are 100 percent false and tremendously damaging to her,” her attorney Charles Harder said.
The Daily Mail Online issued a retraction of the article, which the outlet had published on August 20 with the headline “Naked photoshoots, and troubling questions about visas that won’t go away: The VERY racy past of Trump’s Slovenian wife”.
The article “did not intend to state or suggest that these allegations are true, nor did it intend to state or suggest that Mrs Trump ever worked as an ‘escort’ or in the ‘sex business’,” the retraction said.
Mr Harder represented Hulk Hogan in his successful lawsuit against Gawker Media, which resulted in a $140 million award against the website for releasing a sex tape featuring Mr Hogan and a friend’s wife. –
