A 15-year-old Hlaing Tharyar township resident is in custody after police say he pulled a knife on a taxi driver on September 3.

U San Thein, of North Okkalapa township, was taking fares in his Toyota Corolla at about 9:40pm when he was flagged down by Maung Zaw Zaw Maung near Maelamu Pagoda. The boy said he wanted the taxi driver to take him to a bus stop in North Dagon township and they agreed on a K2000 fare.

When the taxi pulled up to the corner of Bo Ba Htoo and Ba Yint Naung streets, Maung Zaw Zaw Maung, who was sitting behind the driver’s seat, pulled out a 6-inch (15-centimetre) knife and held it to U San Thein’s neck. The boy told the driver not to shout, but the driver grabbed the knife, suffering a sliced left thumb, and called for help.

Police later apprehended Maung Zaw Zaw Maung and he has been charged under section 386 of the penal code for extortion through grievous injury. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison. The victim U San Thein was taken to North Okkalapa hospital.
