Teak traf­fick­ers busted in Hmawbi

Po­lice stopped a bus packed with il­le­gal teak at a toll gate in Hmawbi town­ship on Septem­ber 3.

The bus, which had five pas­sen­gers, pulled up to the gate at about 7am. Po­lice found 89 wooden doors, in­clud­ing some made of teak, un­der­neath a tarp in­side the bus’ stor­age sec­tion and un­der­neath two pas­sen­gers. The driver, Ko Zaw Win Naing, fled and has not been caught. The five pas­sen­gers were ar­rested. If con­victed un­der the Forestry Law, they stand to face up to seven years in prison. wounds to the leg.
