Chi­nese mahjongg gam­blers ar­rested

Five peo­ple were ar­rested for play­ing mahjongg, a Chi­nese tile match­ing game, in Hlaing Thar­yar town­ship on Septem­ber 5.

Po­lice found the game at a Chi­nese com­mu­ni­ca­tion com­pany staff mem­bers’ house on Shwe Hninsi Street in the fourth ward at about 4:45pm. Four Chi­nese na­tion­als, in­clud­ing Xa Hai Bo, 48, and an in­ter­preter, Ma Zin Mar Htet, 20, were in plas­tic chairs gam­bling on an elec­tric, green mahjongg board with 115 tiles and K5.58 mil­lion (US$4600) and 14,700 Chi­nese yuan ($2200) in bets. Po­lice ar­rested all five al­leged gam­blers but have not yet re­leased in­for­ma­tion on their charges. – Toe Wai Aung, trans­la­tion by Emoon and San Layy
