Dubai drops charges against Bri­ton

PROS­E­CU­TORS in Dubai have dropped charges against a Bri­tishAus­tralian man who used so­cial me­dia to high­light the work of an Afghan refugee char­ity, a lo­cal news­pa­per said.

Scott Richards, 41, was ar­rested on July 28 for al­legedly breach­ing a new law on pro­mot­ing for­eign char­i­ties, but he was re­leased on bail last month.

“Dubai Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tion con­firmed that no crim­i­nal case will pro­ceed,” 7Days daily re­ported on its web­site.

Mr Richards grew up in Ade­laide in Aus­tralia and then lived in Lon­don be­fore mov­ing to Dubai about eight years ago, ac­cord­ing to UK-based cam­paign group De­tained in Dubai.

He is mar­ried and has two sons aged 14 and three.

Mr Richards came across the char­ity dur­ing a visit to Afghanistan, where he worked as an eco­nomic devel­op­ment pol­icy ad­viser for the gov­ern­ment, ac­cord­ing to his brother, Brett. –
